Educational Neuroscience: Is it a field?

The Institute for Behavioral Sciences at the ETH Zurich hosted the 2010 Meeting of the Special Interest Group (SIG) 22 "Neuroscience and Education" of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI).

Conference Themes

The central theme of the meeting focused on theoretical and conceptual issues. The field of educational neuroscience (or at least collaborations between neuroscience and education) emerged for the first time more than 10 years ago. With the advent of centres for educational neuroscience and mind, brain and education, it is of particular importance to ask:

• Where are we now?
• Where is the field going to?
• Which questions have been asked and answered (un-)successfully?
• Which findings are relevant for instruction in school?
• Which questions need to be addressed in future work?

Target audience:

• Scientists working in a field related to cognition, education and/or neuroscience
• Teachers and Policy-makers interested in educational neuroscience

Satellite Events

Two satellite events took place immediately before and after the meeting:

• Symposium "Neuroscience in School" (in German)
• Symposium "Educational neuroscience of language learning and dyslexia: Where are we and where can we go?"
